About Us - Laura Lin Gosbee
Laura Lin Gosbee, MASc is a Human Factors Engineer who has worked in the health
care domain since 1992. She has worked with and consulted for healthcare
organizations in the United States and Canada, to assist them in their patient safety
efforts, including human factors testing of error-prone infusion pumps, and redesigning
processes and protocols in nursing and pharmacy practice. She has led design efforts
around tools and training for managing food anaphylaxis which have been adopted by
schools, childcare centers, and healthcare clincians.
Laura received her Masters of Applied Science (MASc) degree in 1997 (and BASc in 1993) from the
University of Toronto, Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and Institute of Biomedical
Engineering. Her graduate research in the Cognitive Engineering Lab was focused on applying human factors
engineering to the analysis, re-design, and testing of Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps. The thesis
was awarded 1st place by the Canadian Society for Industrial Engineers in their National Thesis Competition.
Her publications in the health care arena include journal articles and book chapters on the application of
human factors to medical device design, clinical risk management, and medication safety. Recently, Laura
co-edited and wrote the human factors primer for the book, Using Human Factors to Improve Patient Safety:
Problem Solving on the Front Line, 2nd Ed.
Laura's clients include: Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) - Canada, ISMP US., Iowa Methodist
Medical Center, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO). Some of her recent work with ISMP-Canada focused on human factors of the double
check process in health care. See the ISMP-Canada safety bulletin on double checks and the test report that
describes usability testing of double check processes.
Previous to forming Red Forest Consulting, LLC in 2003, Laura was a Human Factors Engineer at Northrop
Grumman, conducting human factors engineering analyses and testing for both small and large scale
research and development efforts with the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy.
Laura has also worked in the nuclear power domain with Westinghouse Electric Co., conducting human
factors testing of process displays developed for next generation nuclear power plant control rooms.
